Fair Game Articles

Wednesday, April 1st, 2009 @ 21:35 | Study

I just wanted to reiterate what I’m sure you’ve heard before if you’re revising for the exam, and that is that anything in the CEACCP supplement that comes with the BJA is “Fair Game” for a SAQ or for MCQs in the exam (…as if they didn’t have enough to worry about - Ed.)

In the April 2009 issue we think that the following articles are high possibilities:

Exomphalos and Gastroschisis

Arterial Tourniquets

Fast-track surgery and anaesthesia (after all, isn’t this what the government would love us to do for every kind of surgery???)

Gastrectomy for Adenocarcinoma

Management of Cardiac Disease in Pregnancy (though we think this is lower than the others mentioned so far - it appeared in the October 2008 paper).

Whilst those articles are fair game for future exams particularly the autumn sitting I would be interested in your view on how up to date with recent literature we should be for the April exam. The exam will have been written in advance. Last years April exam was finalised in February whilst for the October exam we are not told a date.

I consider anything up to Feb 09 fair game but do not think they will be including anything after that in the upcoming exam.

      I think you’re right.
Perhaps I should have clarified that.

Looking back at the SAQ reports for the October 2008 paper, it was set in February 2008, as was the April 2008 paper. It takes a bit of effort to write the questions, and they will usually be done well before the meeting (though some people will leave it until the last minute, as in all walks of life!) However, read on in the report and they do point out that the questions can be changed at a later stage…

Look back through previous posts on EI to before the April/June exam last year, and compare with what actually came up as well…

Above all, be aware of what is going on out there…read more in subsequent posts.
